You feel alone; the world has turned its back on you. It has shown you the ugliest side, but don’t be so hard on yourself. I hope, no matter what terrible loss you feel in your chest, you never lose sight of the person you’ve become. You never forget the amount of pain you’ve already fought through, the tenacity and spirit running through your veins.
Recently, a thought hit me, completely out of the blue. It struck me silently, but, like the force of an oncoming train, it compelled me to immediate action.
I’m alive, but I haven’t been breathing.
To an outsider looking into the vast labyrinth of my mind, my thought would seem to be an impossible contradiction. One must breathe to live, after all. But I no longer wanted to breathe to simply survive. I wanted to breathe with purpose.
Reflectively.
Meditatively.
Though the world will give you chaos, though it will close doors you long to keep open, or open ones that feel foreign and frightening, you will always have the ability to fight back, to stand tall, to continue forward through this mess. Regardless of what you face, you will always be a brilliant person, brightening the sky with your laugh and smile and faith.
No matter what you face, remember this—no one can shut off a light that burns from within. So stand with confidence and ignite the sky. Look not into the past. Leave behind all the pain, the hurt, and disappointments, the anger. Be reborn. Take a deep breath, release. Congratulate yourself on how far you have come. It’s not easy being you. Now, as we all grapple with the challenges ahead of us, Let me remind you to take a moment and breathe, focus on the breath, and let today as you read through this be the day you recommit to self-care.
To take a few moments each day — a respite from respite work, a respite from life — and breath. Just breathe, deeply, inhale and exhale all the bullshit out of your two strong lungs :)
